IN SHORT

Tuiskula Farm is a regenerative family farm in Lappers, Siuntio. We operate from the strongest focus on soil health to grow the highest quality vegetables and eggs; in terms of nutrition, health and freshness. Our soil is our greatest resource, anything we do, aims to regenerate it. That means never plowing or spraying, always covering soil with plants or mulch and managing livestock on frequent rotation (24-48h) - mimicking nature’s ways. While growing your food we bind many tons of carbon in the soil, permanently, and support biodiversity.
You can buy our products at our farm, selected farmers markets, reko rings (Helsinki, Espoo, Kirkkonummi, Inkoo) or as a weekly box delivered to your neighbourhood (see below).

Our no dig vegetable beds early in the season.

METHOD

Tuiskula Farm is a small scale, bio intensive and highly efficient farm. On our 1 hectare home plot we grow all our vegetables, herbs, berries, fruits and nuts, as well as grazing sheep over the summer (home use). We utilise every square metre of it, often for multiple uses at the same time. When practical, several vegetables are intercropped in the same bed, the greenhouse grows vegetables through the summer and houses our egg laying flock through the winter.
We only operate along regenerative growing methods that build soil. Any activity that degrades our soil is not an option on our farm. In practice this means that we never plow or till our soil, never use chemical fertilisers or biocides and carefully plan the impact of our grazing animals in order to sequester the largest amount of carbon, build soil and soil fertility.

PRODUCTS

Currently our two main operations are ‘no dig’ vegetables and pastured eggs. In the years to come we have plans to start producing more microgreens, berries, fruit and nuts, honey and other pastured animals.

No Dig Vegetables
Our 600m2 of beds are never dug or tilled, which increases their organic matter content and with it the soil health and water retention. They are increasingly resilient to harsh weather conditions and highly productive. ‘No dig’ vegetable gardening is recognized to be the most productive per square metre, as well as to produce the best quality vegetables. The beds receive a yearly application of compost on top, which is worked in by the microbiome that lives in the soil. The compost is produced on our farm, from the winter bedding of our flock of hens and vegetable production waste.
We test our soil to make sure biology and nutrients are both represented in adequate amounts. We also test the nutrients in the leaves (refractometer) and can thereby guarantee their nutritional quality as well as shelf life. Vegetables are picked the same day or at most the day before delivery. They are stored only short term in our walk-in chiller at appropriate temperature and humidity levels. Root vegetables for fall and winter are stored in sand boxes in our root cellar.
Our entire vegetable production follows organic standards, and we are in the process of organic certification.

Pasture Raised Eggs
Our flock of 350 chicken are moved to fresh grass at least every 48 hours. This way they get the best nutrition, while taking care of the soil in the best way. They spent the winter in our greenhouse, with free access to pasture.
The difference with regular free range birds is that ours are on fresh grass and are helping to build soil in order to improve its resilience, fertility, water retention and carbon sequestration. This is why this method is also called carbon farming. Free range birds with a static chicken coop tend to overgraze and turn their ‘pasture’ into dirt in a very short time. Besides soy-free, organic feed, our birds complement their diet with grasses, herbs, insects and worms. In winter they also receive homegrown root vegetables. You will not find better eggs anywhere!

Other
Besides these we are waiting patiently for our berry bushes and fruit and nut trees to grow. We also produce microgreens and are looking into honey and other pastured animals. We intend on remaining a small but very intensive farm, making the most of little and leaving space for the wild things around us.
